The Spokes Family is a new bluegrass style band which has been born from the merging of the High Nelly groups in Laois (The High Nelly Singers) along with local guests The 65 Kitchen Choir, Brian O’Mahoney & James O’Connor. This is just one part of the fundraising efforts by Laois High Nelly Harriers who are also behind this year's High Nellie Cycle Challenge; a 5day x 250k cycle around Laois on High Nellie/Vintage bicycles for Laois Hospice. The group has a promotional drive in Laois Shopping Centre on Saturday May 25th to promote the CD and raise awareness of the Laois High Nelly Cycle Challenge. The Spokes Family debut is a double A sided single which is accompanied by a video for both tracks. The videos were recorded by Brian Flanagan and scripted and directed by our very own Hugh Sheppard, all actors in both videos are members of Laois High Nelly Clubs. The group also features two of Ireland's most respected bluegrass players Liam Wright (Guitar & Double Bass) and Richard Hawkins on banjo. The CD features two classic bicycle tracks ‘Seeing Nelly Home’ (previously covered by Johnny Cash) and ‘I’m Going Back on my Bicycle’ (written and recorded in 1985 by Tommy Sands from Northern Ireland) The CD was produced at Golden Egg Studios, Portlaoise and was kindly sponsored by Laois Credit Unions.
